What animals show lapping?

Some carnivorous mammals (e.g., cats and dogs) lap water with their tongues to drink water at high frequencies. Such a fast moving tongue creates a liquid column out of a bath which is bitten by the mouth for drinking.

The cat’s lapping mechanism is far more subtle and elegant. The smooth tip of the tongue barely touches the surface of the liquid before the cat draws its tongue back up. As it does so, a column of liquid forms between the moving tongue and the liquid’s surface.

This means they cannot create suction to drink, like humans or elephants and horses. Dogs lap, or take up, the water with their tongues curled backward.

Look for a cat that enjoys playing calmly, but mostly seems to enjoy nap time with its owners. This also means you should look for a cat with a calm, approachable personality. If you choose a cat that seems skittish or scared, it is less likely that the cat will develop into a lap cat even over time.

But, be prepared, Not all cats are natural lap cats! Our kitties are independent creatures and will only spend time with you on their terms; so sometimes they may be happy to sit on your lap, and at others they may prefer to just sit close by, on a rug, or away on a high perch or hidden in their own company!

A dog’s field of vision is much wider than ours; they can see objects at a greater distance, and their ability to see in Twilight, dusk, and dawn Is far superior to ours, making it possible to pick up certain movements that are undetectable to the human eye.

Encouraging the Behavior
