The urial (/ˈʊəriəl/ OOR-ee-əl; Ovis vignei), also known as the arkars or shapo, is a wild sheep native to Central and South Asia. It is listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List.

The Transcaspian urial is A type of mouflon, or wild sheep. Mouslon were the wild ancestors of today’s domestic sheep (likely domesticated around 10,500 years ago). Both male and female urials grow spiral horns. The male’s horns are larger and can measure more than 2.5 feet in length.

The population of Ladakh urial has been declining during the last few decades due to Illegal hunting and habitat degradation by increasing livestock population and extraction of wood, fodder and medicinal plants.

Urial Males have large horns, curling outwards from the top of the head turning in to end somewhere behind the head; females have shorter, compressed horns. The horns of the males are up to 100 cm (39 in) long. The shoulder height of an adult male urial is between 80 and 90 cm (31 and 35 in).

Urial occur in The northwest Himalayas, Karakoram, Hindu Kush, and southwest Pamir, as well as outside snow leopard range in western Central Asia, Iran, the Caucasus, and Turkey (Shackleton, 1997). Several subspecies have been named and the eastern forms are separated by some authors as Ovis vignei.

The urial inhabits western central Asia from the northeast of Iran and the west of Kazakhstan to Balochistan in Pakistan and the Ladakh regions in North India. It lives in Steep grassy terrain below the tree line. It may also occur in agricultural fields and occasionally in partly wooded, mountainous areas.
