When was holywell established?

History. Founded in 2004, the community grew rapidly over its first four years.

Holywell School was built in stages and opened on 1st September, 1973 As a Church of England Middle School in the Diocese of St Albans. Church of England Schools have a long, historic tradition and were originally set up to provide education for the poor of the parish.

The market town of Holywell is known for St Winefride’s Well, a holy well surrounded by a chapel, itself known since at least the Roman period. It has been a site of Christian pilgrimage since about 660, dedicated to Saint Winefride who, according to legend, was beheaded there by Caradog who attempted to attack her.

Overview. The holy well at St Winefride’s has been a place of pilgrimage since at least 1115. It is said to spring from the spot where 7th-century Welsh abbot St Beuno brought his niece Winifred back to life, though it’s likely that this story may actually have much older, pagan origins.

At low tide the cave can be found Tucked under the southern cliffs of Kelsey Head. From the beach it appears a mere slit, but some steps lead up to several stepped pools ascending towards a hole in the cave roof. Take care on the steps, which are covered with slimy green weed.
