How long does it take a fish to die in tap water?

Ordinary tap water is fine for filling up the aquarium as long as you let it sit for several days before adding fish (the chlorine in the tap water will kill the fish). You may also purchase dechlorination solutions at our store.

Lead, mercury, cadmium, and arsenic are among the common heavy metals found in private wells and sometimes in your municipal water supply. If you have any of these in your tap water, there’s a high chance you’ll kill your fish within A few hours.

Chlorine kills living cells, most often damaging fish’s sensitive gills as well as the skin that covers their entire bodies. Fish placed in chlorinated water will begin to suffer from respiratory problems and may suffocate, unable to breathe properly.

Goldfish cannot live in untreated tap water

With chloramination, simply leaving water out over night does not cause chlorine or ammonia to evaporate at all. With chlorination, trace amounts of chlorine may evaporate, but Most chlorine will still exist after sitting overnight.
