Anthony of Padua. On May 5 a presidio (military garrison) known as San Antonio de Béxar was established nearby. The site, on the river’s west bank, was a stopping place on the trail through the Texas wilderness between missions on the Rio Grande and those in East Texas.

It was designed To protect the system of missions and civilian settlements in central Texas and to secure Spanish claims in the region against possible encroachment by other European powers.

But San Antonio was not founded until 1718, when its first mission and first presidio were established at San Pedro Springs.

During the Texas Revolution, San Antonio was the site of several battles, including the siege of Bexar in December 1835 and the Battle of the Alamo on March 6, 1836, which made it one of the most fought-over cities in North America.

After the failure of Spanish missions to the north of the city, San Antonio became the farthest northeastern extension of the Hispanic culture of the Valley of Mexico. The city was for most of its history the capital of the Spanish, later Mexican, province of Tejas.

San Antonio has reclaimed its status as The most impoverished major city in the country, suggests new data from the U.S. Census Bureau, even as its total share of residents in poverty has decreased over the last decade.

In San Antonio, the average income of the top 5% is $307,182, with $103,459 listed as the lowest income for San Antonians to be considered rich. In contrast, Austin was the top Texas city on the list with an average top 5% income of $485,554, with $145,166 listed as the “lowest income to be considered rich.”

San Antonio, also known by such titles as The Alamo City, the Mission City, the River City, and Military City, U.S.A. (which the city trademarked in 2017), has a 300-year history that stretches back to Spanish Texas with the establishment of a presidio, town, and five Franciscan missions along the San Antonio River.

Texas Border Changes

On December 22, 1836, the new Texas government formed the county government of Bexar, with San Antonio as its County Seat.
