How do you keep picked sunflowers alive?

Add 1 teaspoon of sugar, 2 tablespoons lemon juice, and/or 1 tablespoon of vinegar to the water to keep your flowers looking vibrant and healthy. This helps delay sunflowers from wilting. Make sure your sunflowers are not exposed to direct sunlight, cool drafts or heat.

Care Tips: With proper care, sunflowers should last from Six to twelve days. To maximize the vase life, look for flowers that are just starting to fully open. Choose strong, straight stems with perky flowers that look at you.

Allow them to dry for several hours (or overnight). If you’re saving the seeds to re-plant, store them in an airtight container in a cool, dry place until you are ready to plant. Label the container with the variety and the date you harvested.

Choose a clean vase that is tall enough to support the stems, and fill the vase with lukewarm water. The flowers should last about a week if you change the water every day. Keep them in a cool part of the house, away from direct sunlight.

Cut off the bottom inch of each sunflower stem, while it’s still submerged in the bucket, at an angle before transferring it to the vase. Replace the water and preservative in the vase every one to two days to extend the life of the sunflowers.
