Where is vikrant ship now?

At present, Vikrant is at the government-owned Cochin Shipyard in Kerala state – where the ship was built and where the commissioning ceremony was held.

INS Vikrant (1961), a British-built aircraft carrier which was in service from 1961 to 1997, operated as a museum ship from 2002 to 2012 and was Scrapped in 2014–2015.

During the 1971 war, it was decided by Pakistan to use the submarine PNS Ghazi. The book The Story of the Pakistan Navy, published 20 years after the war, describes how Ghazi was asked to go to the Bay of Bengal in 1971 and was given the responsibility of destroying INS Vikrant.

With the latest INS Vikrant, India has a Two-carrier navy. There are plans for another new carrier, though they have not been approved yet.

Significant delays haunted the Vikrant. Its keel was laid down in 2009 and the carrier was only commissioned in September 2022, some 13 years in the making. By comparison, the Shandong’s keel was laid down in 2015 and the ship was commissioned four years later.

The Pakistani submarine Ghazi came quietly off the coast of India in the Bay of Bengal to hunt down and destroy the INS Vikrant, the Indian Navy’s only aircraft carrier. PNS Ghazi waited for about 5-10 miles off the mouth of the Visakhapatnam harbour, armed with torpedoes and mines, for INS Vikrant.

While the Indian Navy credits Ghazi’s sinking to its destroyer INS Rajput, the Pakistani military oversights and reviews stated that “the submarine sank due to either an internal explosion or accidental detonation of mines being laid by the submarine off the Visakhapatnam harbour”.

Thus, it was the accidental detonation of its own mines that destroyed the Ghazi and not INS Rajput’s depth charges. Over the years, the mystery surrounding the sinking of PNS Ghazi has endured. Today, the submarine lies embedded in the Vizag seabed about 1.5 nautical miles from the breakwaters.

Ghazi is inspired by true events from the 1971 Indo-Pakistan War. The story is about a submarine of the Indian Navy, an executive naval officer and his team, who remained underwater for 18 days.

INS Vikramaditya (Sanskrit: Vikramāditya, lit. ‘Brave as the Sun’) is a modified Kiev-class aircraft carrier and the flagship of the Indian Navy. She entered into service in 2013.

Two more aircraft carriers are said to be in the pipeline. The third aircraft carrier will further affirm India’s standing as a ‘Blue Water Navy’ — a maritime force with global reach and capability to operate over deep seas.

The ship was decommissioned in 1997 and laid anchored off Mumbai Harbour, serving as a museum. In 2013, the central government decided to scrap the ship as it was becoming too expensive for its upkeep. Despite opposition from certain groups, the ship was sold off to Darukhana ship-breaker For Rs 60 crore.

After being commissioned on September 2, indigenously-built aircraft carrier INS Vikrant Will be combat ready by May 2023.
